Business Networking Tips – Clear the Trees

This excerpt is from the upcoming book: Face-to-Face Networking Skills

by Mindy Selinger

All of the information and resources you need to be successful are within your reach, just waiting to be discovered. We can get so busy and single minded on one part of our business that we ‘can’t see the forest for the trees’. That’s where having a PowerPartner comes in.  They’ll see an opportunity for you and share it with you. They’re worth their weight in gold. This comes from personal experience.  Not long ago, one of my PowerPartners sent me an email of a resource that she thought I would benefit from. She included in her email exactly how she saw me using this resource. I knew about it. In fact, I had  received the very same email that morning. But at the time I was really busy. I had so many ‘trees’ in front of my that I couldn’t see the ‘forest’ or the application that she saw for me. I took action and the result was huge, MASSIVE. I’m very thankful that she took the time to share her ideas with me…  A Good PowerPartner Has Your Back. You can find an excellent PowerPartner at your local Business Networking Groups.

Peter Shankman (of HARO) on how Facebook is misused

I love this guy! Even though I get 3 emails a day, each taking several minutes to read. I never miss one. (he has nearly 50,000 subscribers and an ‘open rate’ that is just to die for!) “He is redefining the art of networking” is how PR Magazine has described Peter Shankman. Peter is uproarious… a skydiving social media addict and a marathon-running, hyper-active PR specialist.  Peter is owned by two cats (NASA and Karma). He founded HARO (Help A Reporter Out) HARO is an unique business networking website. The three or so emails a day contain inquires from reporters looking for sources. I have been quoted in a national magazine! I know lots of people who are experts in their field. Every week I forward several queries to people I know. Some of the people I’ve forwarded to have actually been quoted and are in print. HARO is one of my favorites because it matches the philosophy I teach; be a hub through which information flows. To start forwarding queries to the experts you know, subscribe to HARO today. Perhaps it will be their “big  break”. Just follow his simple rules.

I’ve told you who Peter is because I wanted to share his article on the misuse of Facebook invitations.  Go to shankman.com to read the article. My thoughts exactly. Even though Facebook and LinkedIn are business networking sites. Does being someone’s connection on LinkedIn or FB imply that I want to be added to their marketing promotions? Usually I’ve been added to there marketing list, (I didn’t request it.) so the FB invites are duplicates. I’ll wager this is happening on LinkedIn and FaceBook. Just recently I received this message on LinkedIn: “Please vote for my Mom. She has signed up for the “I Believe” contest to win a trip to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.” Nope… sorry. Enjoy!
